A failing ballast is one of the most common E90 headlight faults. The xenon light flickers, turns pink, drops out after a few minutes or stays off, often with a light-failure warning. Replacing the ballast is far cheaper than a new headlight.

Installation

1. Switch the lights off, remove the key and disconnect the negative battery cable. Let the bulb cool.
2. The ballast is bolted to the bottom of the headlight housing. On the E90/E91, the headlight usually has to come out, and depending on access the front bumper cover may need to be removed first.
3. Remove the headlight mounting bolts, unplug the harness and lift the headlight out.
4. Remove the Torx screws holding the ballast to the housing, unplug it and remove the old unit.
5. Check the old ballast reads W3T13271 or 63126948180, fit the new unit and tighten the screws evenly so the seal stays tight.
6. Refit the headlight, reconnect the battery and check for a light warning in the cluster.
7. If the light still flickers, replace the D1S bulb, since a worn bulb can stress a new ballast.

Xenon systems carry high voltage. Never work on the ballast with the lights on.
