Installation (2001-2007 Toyota Highlander)
Tools: flat trim tool or taped flat screwdriver, 10 mm socket and ratchet, masking tape for the fender edges.
- Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Pry up the 4 push pins across the top of the grille, release the side clips, and pull the grille out.
- Remove the 10 mm screws along the bottom of the bumper cover and the screw at each wheel-well edge (peel back the fender liner to reach it).
- Tape the fender edges, spread the bumper cover ends, and pull the cover forward. Unplug the fog lights if you remove it fully; many owners just tilt it forward a few inches.
- Remove the 2 upper headlight screws, release the snap clip and guide pin, and pull the lamp straight forward.
- Unplug the connectors and twist out the 9005, 9006 and 3157 sockets/bulbs (counterclockwise).
- Move the 10 mm mounting pin from the old lamp to the new one if your new housing does not have it.
- Install the bulbs in the new lamp, plug in, set the lamp on its guide pin and clip, and reinstall the 2 screws.
- Repeat on the other side, refit the bumper cover and grille, then test all lights and aim the beams against a wall.
Steps based on the Toyota Highlander service manual bumper procedure and Toyota Nation owner write-ups.
FAQ
Do I have to take the whole bumper off?
Not always. Owners on Toyota Nation report removing the top grille pins and the wheel-well screw on each side, then tilting the bumper cover forward a few inches — enough to reach the two headlight screws. Full removal gives more room.
Will these fit my Highlander Hybrid?
No. The 2006-2007 Highlander Hybrid uses a different front end and headlights. This pair is for gas models.
What bulb sizes do these use?
High beam 9005, low beam 9006, turn signal 3157 (bulbs NOT included).
Can I put LED bulbs in these?
Yes. These are halogen housings, so 9005/9006 LED conversion kits fit. Use a quality kit with a CANbus decoder if you see flicker or a bulb-out warning, and re-aim the beams after install.
